Companion: A Societal Critique
By: Emanuelle Valentine Calas Welter
Companion (Directed by Drew Hancock) is an outstanding societal critiquing movie that focuses on imprisonment and freedom. Symbolism is used all throughout the movie to showcase real-life struggles. This movie is made to remind women that the holds of patriarchal society will never be strong enough to keep them from being free. It is not only about a robot, but about self discovery and understanding of who you are without the “voice” telling you what to do all the time.
Jack Quaid (Josh) and Sophie Thatcher (Iris).
Jack Quaid and Sophie Thatcher were amazing in this production. They played out their characters flawlessly and with care. Interestingly, Josh almost reminded me of Richie from Scream who Quaid also played. I am especially excited for what Sophie Thatcher will do next.
The most relatable scene for any woman is when Iris finds out Josh decided to only use 40% of her intelligence. Men dumbing down women to prevent them from outsmarting them is a tale as old as time. There are many surprise elements in this movie that I never expected but were so fun to watch. Everyone at the theater loved the movie and as a woman it was empowering to watch her break free from him. I have never rooted for a character more. I also admire comedy being used because it made it that much more interesting. I would rate the movie a 10/10 and I recommend it to anyone who would like to watch it.
Will you watch this thrilling movie on the big screen? And if you alreayd have, what did you think?
