Venezia,The Sinking City
It is known by many that Venezia is called the “sinking city” because it sinks about one to two milliliters per year. But why? Well, the foundations sit atop long timber supports that go deep into a lagoon which makes the mud shift and set, which moves the foundation, as well as the fastening erosion of the fortifications keeping Venezia afloat. Another reason is because of global warming. As the polar ice caps melt, the water raises sea levels.

Is anything being done? Yes. The Modulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico (MOSE) is a barrier that can be raised to protect the city from flooding by closing the four main channels that connect Venezia to the Adriatic Sea. And these barriers have been raised more than expected. MOSE had struggles in the beginning but it has saved Venezia many times, especially in 2020 and 2021, although considered a “failed project” because its efficiency is doubted.
Consorzio Venezia Nuova
Venezia continues to be tragically beautiful and classic, although not the ideal place to live because of its conditions, it is a great traveling spot. Venetians are considered nice and welcoming towards tourists but this is not to be abused, if you are traveling to Venezia be mindful and respectful because the crowds can be overwhelming and quite annoying.
What is your dream place to visit or live at?
