Iniyah Collins: Ode To Melvina

My name is Iniyah Melvina Collins, but I go by Niyah. I write because I have a harder time expressing my emotions compared to others.I found that when I write, it's easier to find specific words for these emotions. This specific poem I'm sharing is called "Ode to Melvina," and I wrote it in honor of my grandmother after she passed away. She and I share the name Melvina, and I felt that this outstanding woman who I learned so many things deserves for someone to always spread her legacy. It was also my way of dealing with the grief and pain of losing her while also reminding myself of her presence and love for me.
Ode To Melvina by Iniyah Collins:
Is she somewhere dark right now?
Is she comfortable?
I don't know if being in the dark would be better than being in pain
I'm trying to convince myself that she's comfortable now
Much more comfortable than when she was in that hospital bed
Where she couldn't move
She couldn't speak either
But I still talked to her
I talked about my poems
The ones that I read her that she had loved so much
And the ones I wished I had read to her but was too afraid to be vulnerable
I told her that I would read her another one after I'd finish it
And in response to that she recited one of her poems back to me
I can't exactly remembered what it was about but I remember her voice when from when she recited it
It was the same voice she used to
Sing me songs
"Sugar pie honey bunch"
She would sing
As she embraced me----
"You know that I love you"
For a hug so gentle
But firm so you could feel the love
I wonder could she hear me?
Could she hear me when
I cried how much I loved her
I couldn't say it enough
I couldn't say anything
Every word in my vocabulary slipped away from me as if I wasn't familiar with the language
I couldn't form a sentence
I could only think of the past
I could only think of her voice as she sang to me
"Sugar pie honey bunch"
"You know that I love you"
"I can't help my self"
I love you and nobody else""
