Smile 2 by Parker Finn was much worse than the first one. I, myself, am a horror movie enthusiast and was excited to watch the movie on the big screen, however, after watching Smile 2 I had to take a break from watching them. The movie is similar to the first but includes a lot more gore. It does expand on the explanation of the virus but not as much as expected.
This movie wasn’t, in any way, enjoyable. It felt as if I was watching clips of people hurting themselves on the deepest and darkest parts of the internet. At times, the screams from the characters felt too real and uncomfortable. It is obvious that is the intent of the movie, but my question is why. There is no apparent reason to release a movie such as this one just to cause torment and distress. After the lights went out no one stood up and the screams of Skye Riley played for a few minutes, everyone in that theater was shocked and they could only react once background music played along with the screams.
It is important for an audience when watching a horror movie to be able to comprehend those scenes are not real and this movie did a bad job of that. It wasn’t a “scary” movie or a “slasher”, it was pure psychological terror for fun. And although, arguably, it calls out society as vicious and uncaring it is not enough to excuse these mentally disturbing scenes.
As for the plot, it was interesting that everything she went through was the virus in her head as well as the camera flipping upside down when the virus was in control, however, the circumstances of the virus and its origin were not developed, which is what I was expecting when going into that movie, I was expecting an explanation to the first movie and not the same format but with other characters and more shock value. Some movies use the same format for every single one and are still fun, for example, the Scream franchise. Smile tried and failed.
Smile 2 is an unnecessary movie that was impossible to enjoy. I appreciate the dedication of Naomi Scott as Skye and her work was brilliant, as were the execution and production, but the premise of the movie is simply poor in thought. I have no interest in watching any other movies of the franchise. I would not recommend this movie to anyone and would advise against it.
