We Live In Time by John Crowley — Irish director and producer — is a critically acclaimed, thought-out, and thought-inducing film that will leave you crying by the end of it. The film was beautifully performed by Florence Pugh as Almut and Andrew Garfield as Tobias (two geniuses in the performing arts). At first, the shift in perspectives can be confusing as the audience tries to grasp onto the clues to figure out what is happening, however, once it clicks, the immersiveness of it all comes crashing down on you like a tsunami. It feels as though you are in the movie, acting as a bystander, watching their lives change in a matter of seconds. The movie deals with themes of grief, love, the end/beginning of life, and the continuation of life after death.

Although the acting portion was eye-watering, the format used by Crowley made the movie that much more interesting. The change of perspectives and periods gave the movie a dynamic aspect, taking away its predictability; that also brought more chemistry between the characters because of how intimate these glimpses into their lives were, it felt almost as if I was invading their privacy. Almut and Tobias weren’t only lovers, they were truly best friends, even when the hardships of her diagnosis came through, the love between them could not be more palpable. But the emotional rollercoaster doesn’t stop there, in many moments of the film — i.e. Almut giving birth in a convenience store — I was on the edge of my seat, rooting for these people and hoping everything would turn out fine in the end. Crowley did an amazing job connecting the audience and the characters.

This movie is humanity, mundanity, loss, fulfillment, and disappointment. But not once was it depressing. It deals with real issues and impacts anyone who watches it. We Live In Time is one of the greatest movies I have ever watched and I would recommend it to anyone. It makes you reflect on life and can even prompt you to appreciate the little things that come with it. The movie ends beautifully with the metaphor of Almut saying goodbye to her husband and child as she skates away from them, finally cutting to a shot of a sunset, showing how life goes on even after a great loss and reminding the viewer that loss doesn't necessarily come with disregard to who that person was. Truly an amazing movie.
